Saturday Sound Off

Today, a snivelling, sixteen year old, grubby looking moronic youth, with a Lonsdale uniform came up to my desk and asked me for a copy of a PlayStation game called Call of Duty.

I read the cover and discovered it is a simulation of the D Day landings at Normandy.

When I am World Leader, I will have these games banned forever. How dare the makers of games think it is acceptable to make games out of horrific deaths? There are men and women in this country who lost relatives and loved ones in WWII. What the hell do they make of all this? Imagine if your father had been killed in the war, and now you discover that Sony have made a game of it?

This boy would never have the courage or the ethics to fight for his country. He doesn't even have the good manners to go and look for a job.

In the world of Clank, he would be ridding the local river of abandoned shopping trolleys, earning enough money to buy himself a Playstation game that teaches him health, hygiene and better fashion sense.

Clanky,
I agree with you about violent video games. I hate them, but I also despise violent movies and music.
Does my 16 year old son play violent video games? Sadly yes.

Alex, your father is a far better and more tolerant person than I.

with the way history is taught in this country now video games are probably the only way the kids will ever learn about D-day , it's all spent apologising for the empire now

Let me see if I heard this right Alex . I heard or read somewhere that the Holocaust will no longer be taught as having had happened in British schools because apparantly it angers some muslims that deny the holocaust ever happened . I find this hard to believe and wonder if you or clank have ever heard of such a thing ?

emma, if you don't like the video games LP plays, why do you let him have them? granted, i'm 25, but my mom never let me have a video game or game system and it didn't hurt me.

Jilly,
I also allow him to eat fast food and read books that I don't like. I guess I'm just a horrible and lazyass Mom.

Let's hope you'll do better.

They just go and play them round someone elses house anyway,un;less you keep your kids in a capsuel and allow them no freedom at all you can;t stop them doing stuff you disapprove of if they are that way inclined

Everyone complains about the violence of video games, but American movies, television, and novels do often glamorize violence. The Sopranos has tons of violence in it--it's one of the mostly highly praised TV shows ever. The Godfather movies, same deal, and only last year did they make a video game of it. If you want to look at violence's effects, you must look at more than video games.

I find americans treat sex the way I think violence should be treated and violence like I think sex should be treated

I'm not too sure what you mean by the last comment. However, what I do think is that I can't think as to what harm watching sex on tv will do to anyone.

Violence on TV, surely can't be a positive thing?

I know exactly what you mean, Mems. And I agree.

Clank I mean they go into meltdown over janet jacksons nipple but think nothing of having tv shows that have someone beaten to death as the main plot, only HBo seems to act rationally about sex on tv
